Following the suppression of the Jesuit Brotherhood, the Library was established in 1773 by Cardinal Guglielmo Pallotta, treasurer of the Reverend Apostolic Chamber, whose coat of arms,
together with those of Pope Pius VI and the town of Macerata (2), was put on the cupboards in the reading rooms. The great quantity of books belonging to the religious order constituted the former nucleus of the new library which, according to the inventory drawn up at that time, consisted of 4,000 volumes; afterwards it was enlarged thanks to the donations of Giuseppe and Bartolomeo Mozzi (1786) and the Dominican, Father Tommaso Maria Borgetti (1883).
Through the generosity of Father Tommaso Maria Borgetti the collection grew to 9.176 volumes, among which there were incunabula and parchment Mnuscripts, mainly dealing with theological and historical and ecclesiastical subjects.
The libraries of the convents and monasteries which were suppressed in 1808 and in 1861 were later added to these initial donations, as was a series of purchases which includes the personal library of Pius VIII with more than 20,000 volumes. Today the library consists of 300,000 volumes, among them incunabula, medieval statutes, manuscripts, ancient globes, maps, the Archive of the
Accademia dei Catenati and collections of local historical material. A French illuminated Bible belonging to the 13th century is of remarkable interest, as are the three volumes in folio of the
Campi Phlegrei by Hamilton (1776), the Antwerp edition, dated 1573, of the
Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Ortelio and a polyglot Bible published in London in 1657.
