The first construction phase of the Civic Tower dates back to 1492 and was planned by Matteo d'Ancona. The work continued during the 1600s and was only completed in 1653 under Galasso Alghisi da Carpi. At the base of the tower (height 64 metres), where today there is a commemorative stone to Vittorio Emanuele II (1882), the automata representing the Three Wise Men were once located. When the clock struck the hour, the mechanism designed and created by the Ranieri brothers of Reggio (1569) activated the Three Wise Men, who worshipped the Baby Jesus, located in a niche together with the Madonna. The automata, in polychrome wood, are now preserved in the Civic Museum.
